The genesis of the accordion, The Cheng, was developed in China over 4500 years ago. The Cheng is an instrument which uses the free reed, which vibrates by a source of air.
The first instrument that we recognize as an accordion was patented in Paris in 1829 by an Italian of Armenian descent, Cyril Damian.

The accordion first appeared in Italy in 1863 and its production on a relatively large scale in that country began some 13 years later in 1876. As the popularity of the accordion began to grow among the populace, many "serious" musicians, including Ciaikovski, Giordano and Berg, began to take notice.

During the early 20th century, the popularity of the accordion began to take hold world-wide, thanks mainly to its use among Italian emigrants. The year 1953 was undoubtedly the year of the largest expansion of accordion production and marketing. During recent years the development of electronics has had an enormous influence on the accordion. Transistors were first introduced into the instrument in the late 1950s.

Today the accordion has millions of fans all over the world and has earned the right of entry into musical conservatories.

FAQs

What do I look for in buying an accordion?

If you are looking for a button accordion, obviously you are going to get the accordion with buttons on both sides. For a keyboard accordion, get the one with the keyboard on the right side of the accordion.

Accordions tend to be pricey. If you are not sure you are going to commit, get a student-sized 120-bass accordion. This is smaller than professional accordions, but at least you aren't going to spend $10,000 on something you'll be playing for a few months.

If you are a TRUE beginner (as in you've never ever ever ever played before) we recommend that you get a 12-bass accordion. It's very tiny, yes, especially for an adult, but it's not going  to cost you as much and it's an easier instrument to learn with. If you are definitely going to commit to the accordion I strongly recommend getting a professional-size accordion with 120 basses.
